The London Humanist Choir

Not religious?
Enjoy singing?

We are a friendly, non-auditioned London-based choir. Our emphasis is on enjoying music in a welcoming, non-religious environment. Our wide-ranging repertoire consists of secular music that’s joyful and fun to sing. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings, 7-9pm at Doreen Bazell Hall, a short walk from Kings Cross station. New members welcome!

We are part of Humanists UK.

The London Humanist Choir presents ONE LIFE, our annual evening of music and comedy 'in celebration of the one life we have', supported by Conway Hall. It's the climax to a year of rehearsals and performances by the UK's foremost community atheist, humanist, and secular choir.

This year, we are delighted to have comedian Maya Kolaska to compère the show. She will be introducing the choir plus special guests we are just finalising – watch this space for details.

The choir is directed by Laurel Neighbour.

Doors open at 19:00

Tickets are £5. There will be a raffle of some very special items to help cover staging costs and to raise funds for Humanists UK.

Choirantine take 2

We've been busy perfecting our performances to make two new videos for release on YouTube.

Doctor Who was A LOT of fun to make - we definitely unleashed our inner Whovians! We first sang this as a suprise during the wedding reception of one of our Altos - both she and her husband are huge Doctor Who fans. It might have been a bit ropey at the time, but we've since perfected it in rehearsals.

A Little Help From my Friends was one of the stand-out performances from One Life 2019, and we did a special recording session later that year to capture the magic that is Mike Higgins' solo efforts. His brilliant bass is paired with images from some of the events we've had fun performing at over the last few years.

We have more recordings and videos coming up over the next few months as we continue to rehearse over zoom - we're so grateful to Laurel and Alex for their hard work in making the rehearsal magic happen. For however long the lockdown and social distancing continue, we know LHC will continue to make music together.

Choirantine singing

Although we haven't been able to be together, it hasn't stopped us singing together! We've been continuing our rehearsals as a virtual choir, learning some new music - and putting together a music video.

Pokarekare Ana is a beautiful love song from New Zealand, written in both Maori and English. We've been learning it since January - now you can hear how we sound.

It might not be our normal way of performing, but we hope it brings people a bit of happiness in these difficult, strange times. We definitely feel better for having made music together as a choir!

Take a listen above, or you can find it on YouTube here.

Other things we've been occupying ourselves with include regular film nights, pet pageants, pub quizzes and Humanist Island Discs - you  can hear our selections on Spotify here. Our choir feels like a family, and it is so lovely to see everyone supporting each other.

Wishing everyone good health, and sending huge thanks to all NHS and keyworkers!

Choirantine – the return

We're not slowing down in 2021 - we have lots of choirantine videos planned while we're wading through the joys of lockdown #3, and here's the latest one. The Beatles' Can't Buy Me Love, but as you have never heard it before.

It's a madrigal-style a capella version of their 1964 hit, and we're quietly proud of how we've pulled it off as well as the 'unique' video to go along with it.

Virtual Remembrance events – November

November is a busy month of virtual events for the choir. Normally we perform live at remembrance events (2020 has been anything but normal!) but we're really pleased to still be able to take part.

We took part in the Humanists UK Remembrance Day Ceremony, on 7th November, with the event featuring some of the recordings and videos we have made this year in Choirantine. You can rewatch the event on the Humanists UK site.

And on 22nd November, our singing will be part of another virtual remembrance ceremony, this time being organised at West Hertfordshire Hospital NHS Trust. The event is to remember those who have died in the pandemic, as well as an affirmation of life, and an offering of thanks to those working in the NHS.

We also recorded a version of For The Fallen (also known as We Will Remember Them), originally composed in October 1971 for the annual Remembrance Day service at Westminster Abbey, for use during Humanist remembrance events.

As ever, our thoughts are with those who have lost friends and loved ones.

New Choirantine videos

Our latest Choirantine videos could not be more different from each other!

Firstly, a legit banger from the 80s - Whitney Houston's Dance with Somebody - complete with an outstanding video showcasing our dancing prowess. Prepare to be dazzled.

And for something more reflective, a tender song by English folk singer-songwriter Kate Rusby called Underneath the Stars. The video features stunning images from the NASA Image Galleries.

Goes to show, you can never be 100% sure of what the London Humanist Choir will sing next!
